9 Ways Artificial Intelligence Benefits Romantic Relationships

There are so many mixed reactions as it pertains to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some have jumped snappily on the bandwagon of AI enthusiasts. They are exploring every facet it’s got with all they’ve got. Then there’s the sect of the circumspect. These carefully consider, with raised brows, the mission of this “machine-of-a-human”.

As a child of God, you may be on either side or caught in the middle, addled. You wonder whether AI has come to stay. If it has, is it good or evil? And if it is good, should you embrace it? Well, I can’t really say the answer to these definitively, but I can say that artificial intelligence is changing things in quite a remarkable way and at a remarkable rate in our world today.

Is it good? Yes, when used rightly and wisely. Despite its downside, technology has impacted our world profoundly. As believers, we know that every good and perfect gift is from God (Jas. 1:17). God has given the founders of AI the idea, concept, intelligence, grace, strength, wisdom, and life itself to bring this innovation forth.

While not every inventor is a believer, everything – and everyone is the Lord’s (Ps. 24:1). And we are created in the image of the One whose mind conceived and created something as mesmerizing as the galaxies (See Gen. 1). So yes, we can agree that though because of the fall and the devil’s control over the systems of this world, AI can serve the devil’s purposes, it doesn’t overrule the fact that God is the real ideation behind AI.

So, since AI is rapidly changing our approach to many aspects of our lives, including our relationships, it is incumbent upon us to take a deep dive into understanding how it does this.  Hence, we’ll delve into a three-part series addressing the pros, cons, and responsible use of AI in relationships. For today’s piece, we’ll start with the pros.

So if you have been wondering how AI benefits romantic relationships, I pray that this piece enlightens you. First, we’ll begin by understanding what the term “Artificial Intelligence” means, and then proceed to our focus for this piece. With that said, we proceed.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

My English dictionary defines “Artificial Intelligence” in the following ways:

  • The branch of computer science dealing with the reproduction or mimicking of human-level intelligence, self-awareness, knowledge, conscience, and thought in computer programs.
  • The essential quality of a machine which thinks in a manner similar to or on the same general level as a real human being.
  • Intelligence exhibited by an artificial (non-natural, man-made) entity.

In essence, AI simply means the quality of a computer that has been programmed to think not only as a machine does, but as a real human. AI has upsides, as well as downsides, and it’s important to consider them. We’ll start with the upsides in this piece, as it concerns romantic relationships. Do read on!

9 Ways Artificial Intelligence Benefits Romantic Relationships

1. AI Can Help Couples Communicate More Effectively

Knowing what to say is the easy part. Communicating it clearly and with the weight of your heart is the real deal. Relationships don’t always go down the drain because the partners involved fell out of love. Sometimes, it’s because communication was hampered along the way. And this is where artificial intelligence can help.

You can use AI as a guide to say what you would like to say without it coming off as something you don’t intend, especially when you’re in a state of dissonance with your spouse, or you intend to have a difficult conversation on a rather touchy subject.

Even in seasons of misunderstanding, you could feed your thoughts into an AI tool to see the situation from different perspectives (especially from that of your partner). It can help you organize your thoughts, and analyze your tone and choice of words so your words can be seasoned with grace, wholesome, and soothing like a pleasant tree of life (Col. 4:6; Eph. 4:29; Prov. 15:4).

It can also help you to analyze your communication patterns and identify when you are tending towards destructive patterns as you communicate. However, you must remember that AI is only your servant. It is not a substitute for the wisdom from the Holy Spirit, your presence, emotions, or the humility required for the conversation.

2. AI Can Help And Support Long-Distance Relationships

Long-distance relationships are becoming increasingly predominant in our day. You can be genuinely separated from your partner due to educational, work, ministry, or migration purposes. However, no matter the distance, the spark should be kept aflame (Lev. 6:13).

Artificial Intelligence helps a great deal. For couples with language barriers, AI translation tools can help you overcome these barriers so you can enjoy shared connection with the ones you love. It can also assist by saving you from the overwhelm of missed meetings with your partner, especially if you have different time zones, by scheduling them.

AI can also improve the quality of your audio and video calls, as well as provide opportunities for shared memories and connection through journalling-aided and self-reflection tools where you can be very much involved in your partner’s life as though you were physically present with them.

Paul often wrote letters borne out of love to the churches in his day that he was miles away from (2 Tim. 1:4; Rom. 15:23-24). Today, we don’t rely solely on letters. We have technology, which includes AI, and if we apply the same principle and use it wisely, it can be of great help indeed!

3. AI Can Enhance Premarital Preparation and Discernment

Victory is from the Lord, but the Lord doesn’t expect us to sit idly waiting for the victory when He has given us wisdom on what to do (unless He instructs otherwise) (Prov. 21:31). Faith without works, the Bible says, is dead (Jas. 2:26). While we pray and trust in the Lord to decipher His will concerning our relationships, the Lord oftentimes graciously gives us the wisdom we need to discern His will from our relational experiences.

Alignment is key in a marital union to help partners keep up with the demands of the covenant. So assessing areas of alignment and misalignment is salient. And yes, AI can help in this regard, as it can, through the input you feed it about your relationship, help to identify the areas where you are aligned or not.

You can also employ it to generate reflection questions that can help you understand the values that you and your partner deeply hold on to. It can also provide discussion prompts for conversations that you might be scared of having, for example, on issues like sex, expectations, involvement of the extended family, domestic roles, and you name it.

Again, if employed wisely and as led by the Spirit of God, it can be adopted into premarital marriage counseling curricula used in churches and other godly, well-meaning organizations in such a way that the sessions become personalized to the relational experience of the couple and individuals in question.

4. AI Can Assist in Identifying and Addressing Relational Patterns

About some time back, I realized that I didn’t always behave the way I expected myself to behave when navigating relationships. In my quest to understand the quandary I was in, I began gathering a lot of resources that helped in that regard.

However, with the advent of AI, I have found it particularly helpful to use AI to gain more in-depth knowledge on the reasons why I am often predisposed to behaving certain ways. You can also find it helpful, and it can prompt you to ask yourself the hard questions we often miss in a quest to heal from trauma, abuse, neglect, rejection, or you name it.

Not only that, but as partners in a relationship, you can use AI apps as a kind of logbook or journal where you record your experiences regularly. With time, your data entries will provide deep insight into some of your relationship dynamics you may have unwittingly ignored.

And I know you may have concerns about a machine knowing everything that happens in your relationship. That’s why we have explained the need for wisdom and the Holy Spirit’s guidance throughout this piece (Jas. 1:5; Rom. 8:13-14). In the end, you just play your part with the right motives, and rest in God (Ps. 62:5; Isa. 26:3), believing that even if things go awry, He is merciful to work it all out for your good and His glory (Rom. 8:28).

5. AI Can Enhance Access to Relationship Support Where It Has Been Inaccessible

In my region of the globe, seeking therapy or professional help is seen as something only the elite, educated, or wealthy people do. Many people hardly even consider it because it feels way out of reach. And sometimes, it’s not even about that.

People are going through deep, real struggles in their relationships, yet somehow, because of the culture and the people there, seeking professional help, even when it is available, is accompanied by much stigma. Other times, there’s professional help, but the local counsellors are not fully trained or equipped to handle them.

And other times, many people are barely struggling to survive, and don’t have the time to spare to seek professional help. In these cases, relationships keep getting worse. Yet AI is changing things for the better in these regions, where it is offering this support from the comfort of homes with just a few clicks on a smartphone.

The Bible encourages us to seek counsel and gain instruction (Prov. 15:22; 16:20), and AI is helping people of all social climes enjoy this rather than restricting access to a privileged few. Nevertheless, the presence of AI does not undermine the importance of counsellors (especially those grounded in Christ), and where possible, they should be present to guide the process.

6. AI Can Support the Mental Health of Partners in the Relationship

These days, with the frenzied, fast-paced, busy, and capricious nature of our society, many people are coming down with mental health issues. Suicide rates are at an all-time high, yet in many regions of the world, including some Christian circles, the issue of mental health is often frowned upon and accompanied by much stigma.

Yet, God didn’t make us beings without reason, especially when it comes to handling relationships. He gave us minds and emotions, and these are things that God Himself has. As creatures made in His image (Gen. 1:27), although these have been corrupted because of the fall, we have the responsibility of stewarding them and keeping them submitted to Christ (Jas. 4:7; Gal. 5:16; 1 Cor. 6:19-20).

Mental health issues like trauma, depression, grief, anxiety, and even illnesses need helpful interventions. And AI-assisted tools often help greatly in this by offering therapy and understanding of our emotional and psychological states.

As said earlier, this doesn’t preclude the importance of getting professional help. Let AI only assist and advice, but not dictate. God desires our whole being to thrive, not just our souls (3 Jn. 2). He cares (1 Pet. 5:7), and He wants us to care too – for our benefit, those of others, and for His glory.

7. AI Can Help Couples Navigate Financial Planning Together

Money is a source of comfort (Eccl. 10:19), but it can also be a cause of friction in a relationship where there is a lack of it, or where it is mismanaged. Proverbs 21:20 tells us that it is not enough to just make money, but stewarding it is vital as a child of God.

Chances are that as partners in a relationship, you will often have different spending philosophies, savings habits, financial goals, debt histories, risk attitudes and you name it. In the early years of marriage, these differences, if not managed, can constitute a financial cataclysm and can ultimately lead to the marriage ending.

This is where the wisdom of God, employed through His leadings and the assistance from AI-powered tools, can help. AI-powered tools can aid with joint budgeting, spending tracking, financial goal setting, and financial advice based on your specific experiences in a way that is honest yet inoffensive, and keeps you accountable. It also helps you to think and act objectively when your emotions would rather that you act otherwise.

8. AI Can Help Couples Become More Intentional And Creative

In the early moments of meeting your partner, especially when you are dating, you find that you are often mesmerized by your partner and no one has to cajole you to express your love creatively.

It’s just what you do. But when you eventually commit, have more duties and responsibilities, children arrive and bills accumulate, you find out that romance becomes more of a routine and not something to look forward to. This is where AI can be especially helpful.

It can generate date ideas, conversation questions, anniversary ideas, relationship check-ins, and other shared activities you can engage in to keep the fire aflame. In fact, if you are a couple with limited finances, it could even suggest inexpensive ways to spend quality time together.

It can also provide a platform where you both can learn and grow together, as well as provide ideas about career aspirations, relocation, financial goals, family planning, education, retirement, and shared projects to keep you intentional about your future. It’s how you can make the most of every opportunity as Scripture enjoins us in Ephesians 5:15–16.

9. AI Can Help You Grow In Your Walk With God

I find it interesting to sometimes ask AI about questions I have encountered while reading the Bible. Of course, you must treat this with caution, for AI is but a machine prone to errors. Again, not all its programming is always pro the Kingdom of Christ, for it is not wired to be religious or understand your unique context, and can mislead if not handled properly.

Yet still, AI can be a very helpful tool for you as an individual and as a couple to be more intentional about your walk with God. You can use AI as a Bible study guide, a concordance, or as a deep dive into understanding biblical history, contexts, and settings.

It can also generate Bible-study questions, Scripture-reading plans, prayer topics, devotional discussion prompts, and help you understand Scripture better and how to live it out practically, as representatives of the King (2 Cor. 5:20). It even makes study less jejune and more interesting and lucid, and it’s quite portable and inexpensive.

Yet, there’s a caveat: you must use AI in such a way that it does not become your god (Ex. 20:3). Let it provide ancillary support, and do not ignore or refuse to depend on the Holy Spirit for perfect understanding. Because in the end, the created thing should not displace the Creator in your heart (Deut. 6:4-5).

Finally, from everything shared above, we can see that Artificial Intelligence could actually impact relationships for the better by improving communication, helping long-distance couples, aiding premarital preparation and discernment as well as financial planning for partners, addressing relational patterns, supporting mental health, and helping couples to be more creative and intentional, even in their walk with the Lord, at almost no cost.

So yes, AI can and should be embraced. However, as consistently reiterated throughout this piece, AI must remain a tool and a servant of the relationship, not its sole dictator or adviser. Let God have His place, and build what only He can, in the way only He can (Ps. 127:1). I hope you were blessed by reading, friend. Do watch out for the next piece. Stay “teched”. Stay blessed. Peace!
