The Ten Possibilities Singles Can Achieve Holiness
This article gives you the ten possibilities singles can achieve holiness. It helps you see yourself as that person whose body can please God before marriage.
We are the temples of the Living God and God dwells in these temples so we have to please God with our bodies (1 Cor 3:16, 6:18). As youths, we are potential targets to the enemy because we have a future that God is interested in and He desires that we live out the good plan that He has for us (Jer 29:11, Rom 12:2). We can only do this by obeying His commands and one of His commands is to live holy lives free from sexual immorality (1 Thess. 3:10).
Now, these possibilities are :
1) Daily Prayer and Studying God’s Word (1 Thess 5:17, Joshua 1:8).
If we know God and desire to be like Him, we will obey His commands (Jn 14:15). How then can we know Him? Through prayer and study of the Word. As we spend more time with Him, He refines, strengthens, and shapes us to live like Him who lived a holy life and overcame the world (Jn 16:33). The Bible in Ps 119:9 says that “How can a young man keep himself pure? By living according to your Word”. This verse clearly summarises how youths can live holy lives pleasing to Christ Jesus.
As we read, study, and meditate on the Word of God, it will transform and renew our minds to live above the world’s views. (Rom 12:2). The Word of God is our road map, guide, and encouragement to us. It rebukes us, instructs us, and leads us in righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). As we read the Word of God, we should be careful to do as He says because it is those who do the will of God that are blessed by Him and He orders their steps. (Lk 11:23, Matt 7:21, Ps 119:9-11).
2) Fellowshiping With Like-Minded Believers (2 Tim 2:22).
As youths, we should not neglect the gathering of the brethren (Heb 10:25). We find nourishment, uplifting, encouragement when we commune in the house of God and with other believers. In 2 Tim. 2:22, the Bible says we should follow love, righteousness, faith, and peace along with those that call upon the Lord out of pure hearts. Also, we should have mentors or disciplers who watch the way we live and correct and encourage us as need be (Heb 13:17).
3) Listening To The Voice Of The Holy Spirit
But the Comforter, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance … (Jn 14:26). The Holy Spirit is our guide, leader, comforter, and friend. He is there for us and speaks to us, telling us where to go, what to do, where to be at a particular time. He also sympathizes with us in our weaknesses. If we are careful to listen to the still voice of God, we shall do what is right and be holy in His sight and make Him proud.
4) Willful Personal Decision
Make a conscious decision to stay holy backed up by appropriate action. Job in the Bible made a covenant with his eyes not to look at a woman lustfully and he obeyed it (Job 31:1). For us to live holy lives, we must determine in our hearts to live holy lives and then back it up with the appropriate actions because faith without works is dead (James 2:26).
If someone says, “I will make A’s in all my courses and he goes home and sleeps instead of reading, do we expect this person to actualize his dream? Of course not! The Bible says we should FLEE youthful lusts…(2 Tim 2:22). If we live in the reality of this verse, we will be careful to flee from anything, anyone and anywhere that the enemy will use to draw us to him. We should rely on God’s grace which gives us the power to say no to every form of ungodliness (Titus 2:12).
5) Watching Your Mind (Phil 4:8, Mark 7:21).
The Bible says that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). We are a sum total of what we read, hear, watch, places we go to.
If you constantly feed your mind with nude pictures, pornography, and listen to things that excite your sexuality, you do not expect yourself to remain pure, because in one way or the other, your mind will be drawn to it and you may want to experience it for yourself. As youths, we should guard our hearts for it is the wellspring of life (Prov. 4:23).
6) Keeping Good Company (1 Cor.15:33).
If you are in a circle of people who when you meet, you discuss things that do not add value to yourselves, you consequently become like them. Keep good friends that will encourage you, hold you when you are broken, and walk with you through trials and temptations (Eccl 4:10). When you have good and godly friends, you build each other up and try to inculcate good values in each other so as to see yourselves becoming the best in life (Prov 17:17, 18:24).
7) Decent And Godly Dressing (2 Pet. 3:4-6).
As youths, we should be open to know that not all we see on social media is true and right. Of course, we see different actresses, actors, divas “slaying” and we want to be like them, but in everything we do, we should imitate Christ who is our greatest role model.
As youths, we should know that we can still look stunning without exposing our bodies. We should watch the way we dress because if we dress indecently, it can lure the opposite sex to us. It also makes us look irresponsible and as potential persons who can be victimized due to rape or sexual assault.
8) Awareness Of The Right Purpose For Marriage.
Some youths are disillusioned with the right purpose for marriage. Some think it is just for sex or procreation. If the youths are enlightened on their God-given purpose for marriage to know that it is a gift from God, they will please God with their bodies (Gen 2:18).
They can be enlightened through talk shows, seminars, conferences, even social media where the Word of God is shared and they are allowed to raise questions and share their opinions (Acts 18:4). Some youths actually have questions burning inside them but feel ashamed or shy to ask them. If avenues are created for this purpose, it will help youths to use their bodies for the glory of God.
9) Making Creative Use Of Their Time.
Most youths spend their time on the internet, social media, and magazines. These add no value to them and are unproductive. If these youths are encouraged to engage in skills and profitable businesses and they are provided with what they need for these, it will encourage them to live holy lives as most of them will not have the time for things that may lure or tempt them to sin (1 Thess. 3:20-12).
Also, they should be encouraged to attend programs in church and be active in them. Magazines, pamphlets, sticky notes, good social media pages with creative and quality content should be made readily available for youths. So that they will easily capture their attention to the undiluted Word of God. Consequently, as they see them often, they will be drawn to it and God will mould and shape their character.
10) Discover Your Vision And Purpose In Life.
On earth, Jesus had a purpose (Jn 8:37). This made him be focused and determined till His purpose was accomplished (Phil 2:8-11). We all have a purpose given to us by God for our time here on earth. When we discover this purpose, we will live holy lives knowing where God is taking us to in the future (Jer. 29:11, Rom 12:2).
Finally, we are youths, we are strong and we have overcome the world through the power that worketh in us (1 Jn 4:4, 5:5). We can live to please the Lord with our bodies for we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Phil 4:13).
